The Listening List: Kiss, Rickie, Melvin and Charlie, 18.09.12

Pretty much a music lead show, which for a station such as Kiss is apt,
and is enhanced by superb station branding in between records which is
some of the best currently airing on UK radio.

After two tracks back to back comes a rushed link that sounds as if it’s pre-recorded,
not least as it defies the rule of “one thought per link” as Melvin and Rickie discuss
the best and worst film soundtracks, which all of a sudden changes into one about
weird school meals from Charlie.

After a Conor Maynard track there’s a link into the news which is predominantly
entertainment based, and it’s interesting to note that there’s no spoken ident
into the news with the presenter handing over to the reader with a drone
building up behind them both.

Two more tracks are followed by a discussion about the recently announced
MOBO nominations and speculation as to whether Tulisa will attend
regarding her commitments on X Factor.

After listeners are invited to send their suggestions, a traffic update
follows, again rather rushed but it’s worth noting that it’s positioned
before as opposed to after an ad-break.

Overall if I was listening to this half-asleep it would be rather difficult
to make out what’s happening, made more so with the songs played
half a semitone faster, a technique used by many stations in order
to fit more music in one hour.

I’d prefer it if the show sounded a bit  more relaxed, keeping
the enthusiasm without cramming in too many phone/text topics
in half an hour, although with Kiss being a music-lead station
maybe it’s the intention for the show to be background listening.
