Just when you think 6Music cannot get any better, in comes a presenter
who many would suggest has been a long time coming.
Commencing a stint on weekend breakfast is former Radio 1 and XFM presenter
Mary Anne Hobbs and it’s rare to hear genuine enthusiasm
and warmness oozing from the DAB receiver.
Is she really 48 years old? It can’t be, the youthfulness still sounds very convincing.
Broadcasting from Media City on the Salford Quays, the show lives up to the station’s
unpredictable reputation of playing the most exciting and eclectic blend
of music so even if there’s a tune that doesn’t float your boat, one that does
isn’t too far ahead.
In fact there isn’t really a duff tune in sight, with Saturday’s show including
off-beat offerings from Bobby Womack and Damon Albarn, to 80s excitement
courtesy of Talk Talk, and even some deep dance via Stetasonic’s “Talkin’ All That Jazz“.
Though the highlight of Sunday’s show comes not from any of the records
(still on fine form mind) but from a short audio insert by Roman Krznaric
waxing lyrical about empathy as part of the item “Three Minute Epiphany”.
The show has a lot of potential to go even further and manages
to destroy the adage that the weekend breakfast show on
a radio station isn’t as important as the Monday to Friday offering.
For those who have to work on either of those two special days
I’d see it as the ideal stress reducer.
